In the land
of aloha, students will explore the history, the diverse multicultural traditions, and the natural beauty of Hawaii, as described by both native and foreign writers over the past
two centuries.
Texts are drawn from a broad
variety of writers, from Captain Cook, Robert Louis Stevenson, Mark Twain and Jack London to David Kalakua and Liliuokalani,
from Jessica Saiki and John Dominis Holt to Barbara Kingsolver, Kathleen Tyau, Eric Chock, Darrell Lum, and others. Field
trips to historic and cultural sites, as well as places of natural beauty, will complete this multidisciplinary approach to
the discovery of this beautiful and most interesting part of the world.
Essays, poems, and stories read in class will come alive as students discover for themselves the
natural wonders that have drawn people from all over the world to Hawaii, and as they are exposed to the rich cultural and
artistic traditions of this remarkable place through its literature, music, and dance.
